WRONG DIRECTION

Week six was a tough one to swallow for Trinity. A doubleheader against North Main that had plenty of promise — and at one point looked like it might deliver — ended in two losses and dropped the team to 3-9 on the season.

Game 1: Trinity 16, North Main 23

This one is going to sting for a while. Trinity came out and played some of their best softball of the season in the early innings, jumping out to an 11-1 lead that had the sideline buzzing. At that point it felt like a statement game — the kind of performance that could turn a season around. But North Main didn't quit, and Trinity couldn't hold them off. The lead slowly disappeared, and by the time it was over North Main had outscored Trinity the rest of the way to take the game 23-16. Blowing an 11-1 lead is the kind of thing that's hard to explain in a box score. It's a combination of things — a few big innings from the other team, some defensive lapses, and momentum completely flipping. Trinity had the game in hand and let it get away, and that's going to be a tough lesson to sit with heading into next week. The offense was genuinely impressive though. Trinity put up 25 hits and 16 runs — numbers that should win a lot of softball games. Dave Martino was unstoppable, going 5-for-5 with a home run and 5 RBIs in what was one of the best individual game performances of the season. Jim Beatty went 3-for-4 with an RBI and 2 runs scored, Trent Beachem added 3 hits and 3 runs, and Brock Beachem chipped in 3 hits and an RBI as well. Logan Myers took the ball on the mound and threw all 7 innings, keeping the team competitive throughout. The offense did its job. The result just didn't go their way.

Game 2: Trinity 9, North Main 10

If game one was painful, game two was even harder to take. Trinity battled back and forth with North Main all game long in a tight, competitive contest that came down to the final inning. With the game tied at 9 in the top of the seventh, Rafe O'Donnell delivered one of the biggest moments of the season — a clutch triple that scored him as the tying run and gave Trinity a real shot at walking away with a win. For a moment it looked like the comeback was complete. But North Main answered in the bottom of the seventh and walked it off 10-9, leaving Trinity on the wrong end of a heartbreaker. The offense again had nothing to be ashamed of. As a team Trinity hit .600 and put up 21 hits. Brock Beachem went 3-for-4 with a strong outing on the mound, throwing all 7 innings and giving the team a chance to win. Evan Shearer went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Jim Beatty, Rafe O'Donnell, Logan Myers, and Dave Martino all added 2 hits apiece, and the lineup kept grinding until the final out.

The Takeaway

Two losses on the night and Trinity falls to 3-9. But it would be wrong to walk away from week six without acknowledging what this team showed. They were up 11-1 in game one and put up 16 runs. They tied game two in the seventh inning and nearly stole a win on the road. The effort was there. The offense was there. It just hasn't been translating to wins, and that's the challenge this team needs to figure out as the season moves into its second half. There's still plenty of softball left to be played, and this group has shown enough to know they're capable of turning things around.
