DEFENSIVE STRUGGLES

There's no sugarcoating it — week three was a rough one for Trinity. The team traveled to face Bright Hope and came away on the wrong end of two lopsided scores. Defensive miscues and errors piled up throughout the night, constantly putting the pitching staff in bad spots and giving Bright Hope opportunities they didn't need to work for. When you hand a team extra outs and extra baserunners, it's hard to win a softball game — and that's exactly what happened.

Game 1: Trinity 7, Bright Hope 18

Game one set the tone for the night, and unfortunately not in a good way. The errors started early and the deficit grew fast. Bright Hope took full advantage of every mistake Trinity made in the field, and by the time things settled down the damage was already done. The offense did what it could. Dave Martino led the way going 2-for-3 with a double and 2 RBIs, continuing his hot start to the season. Corbin Fallen also had a solid game, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Kaleb Young and Brock Beachem each added 2 hits as well, and Jim Beatty chipped in an RBI. But Trinity's 7 runs weren't enough to keep up with a Bright Hope offense that was given far too many extra opportunities by the defense.

Game 2: Trinity 11, Bright Hope 21

If game one was rough, game two was even tougher. Bright Hope came out swinging and Trinity's defensive struggles carried over from the first game. The errors kept coming and the lead kept growing on the other side of the scoreboard. To their credit though, the offense actually came alive in game two in a real way. Trinity put up 11 runs — the second most they've scored in a single game all season — which shows the bats aren't the issue. Brock Beachem had a strong game, going 2-for-2 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored while also handling pitching duties. Jim Beatty was one of the most productive hitters of the night, finishing 2-for-2 with 2 RBIs. Dave Martino continued his consistency, adding 2 more hits and an RBI. Corbin Fallen, Ben Obman, Logan Myers, Aaron Myers, and Cadin Helfrich all chipped in with 2 hits apiece, showing that the lineup was far from quiet. The problem was simply that no amount of offense was going to overcome what was happening on the defensive side of the ball.

The Takeaway

It was a tough night from top to bottom, and the team knows it. Trinity is now 2-4 on the season, and cleaning things up in the field is clearly the number one priority heading into week four. The talent in this lineup has shown up three weeks in a row now — the offense put up 18 combined runs tonight against a team that brought their best. The defense just needs to catch up. Tough weeks happen over a long summer season. The teams that bounce back are the ones that don't let one bad week turn into two. Trinity has shown what they're capable of when everything is clicking, and there's no reason they can't get back to that next week.
